Road Studs South Africa

ROAD STUD FUNCTIONS AND STANDARDS

Road studs enhance driver awareness, guide traffic and improve road safety across South African roads. This quick guide explains color meanings, material types and where each stud should be used, based on SADC-RTSM standards.

ROAD STUDS COLOUR MEANINGS (South Africa)

According to SADC-RTSM and local standards:

White – Lane markings Between lanes on single carriageways or same-direction lanes
Red – Left edge of road Marks the left-hand shoulder or edge of the road
Amber (Yellow) – Right edge of road Used on the right-hand edge of dual carriageways or one-way roads
Green – Entry/exit points Indicates slip roads, lay-bys, or emergency access points
Blue – Emergency services Marks locations used by emergency vehicles (e.g. fire hydrants)

These color codes follow the SADC-RTSM (Southern African Development Community – Road Traffic Signs Manual), which governs road safety standards across South Africa and neighboring countries. Compliance with these guidelines ensures proper lane guidance, hazard marking, and visibility for all road users. View the official SADC-RTSM Volume 1.
